fsck bus error: 'attempt to access beyond end of device' during boot

Anybody has a clue on how to solve the problem as described in

?  I'm installing Debian GNU/Linux for a housemate here, on his old PC.
I'd like to `abuse' him for my new
how-to-make-Debian-useful-for-newbie's project.
