The cdrom install has known problems. See the debian-sparc list for more info.
I've used the sarge installer via netboot which works fine.

Just ext3. If you going to try others, keep in mind that silo can only boot
from a limited amount of filesystems (ext2, ext3, ufs, romfs or  iso9660
according to the manpage).
